“The 5 Second Rule” By Mel Robbins

Just before writing this blog, I was sitting down on my living room sofa with a temperature, debating in my head whether to snuggle under a blanket and watch some mindless TV with my kids, but instead I said to myself “5, 4, 3, 2, 1” I got up grabbed my laptop and here I am writing this blog.

Mel Robbins The 5 Second RuleAs the title suggests this book is entirely about this ‘5 Second Rule’ – the very one that I applied before writing these words. It is without doubt the simplest to apply and yet the most profound of the numerous success tools I have studied and applied in the 11 years I have been studying and working as a leadership coach.


How many people go through life saying

‘I should be getting up now’ – and they don’t.

‘I should be exercising now’ – and they don’t.

‘I would like to speak to that person’ – and they don’t.

‘I should speak up about this … ’ – and they don’t!

If this sounds even just a little bit like you can be, then I recommend that you read this book.

Whilst Mel Robbins (no relation to Tony Robbins) admits in her book that she discovered the rule by accident, there are neurological reasons why the rule is so powerful which make sense to me having myself studied NLP (Nero Linguistic Programming) NAC (Neural Associative Conditioning) and various aspects of Neuro Science.  The bottom line is ‘it really works’!

It’s been a full on week or so on the speaking circuit for me and I found myself recommending this book several times including in a Thought Leadership & Spiral Dynamics talk to the Yes Group and at a ‘How to Make Goals Happen’ talk to all the leaders at The London Association of Business Leaders & Entrepreneurs.

For a bit of fun and very much in line with this book recommendation, for those of you old enough to remember the ‘5,4,3,2,1!’ countdown on the old children’s TV show Thunderbirds – here it is …
